There are many variations of this story. The Midnight Bus 375 is also famous by the name of "Bus to Fragrant Hills". The most repeated version of the story is this:

The incident happened on the bleak night of 14th November 1995, in Beijing, China. An old man (variations say an old woman) was waiting at a bus stop for the midnight bus, speaking to the only other person at the stop, a quiet young gentleman. When the midnight bus 375 (the last bus for the route) finally arrived, both of them boarded it. There were only two other people apart from them on the bus: the bus driver and the ticket collector, a decent lady.

After a while, the driver spotted two shadows by the road, waving at the bus. The driver stopped by them and three people got inside the bus. Two of them were holding up the third between them. His face was down and wasn't visible. A little ahead, the old man picked a fight with the young gentleman, accusing him of stealing his purse. He fussed about it for a while, causing them to get thrown off of the bus. When they had gotten off the bus, the old man's temper vanished. He said that he had saved them both. He also said that the three men who had boarded the bus did not have legs and were floating in the air: and that they were not living. After that, they went to the nearest police station to lodge a complaint. But, their complaints were waved off as utter nonsense. The next day, the company of the bus filed a complaint saying that one of their buses - Bus 375 - had gone missing along with the driver and the ticket collector. The police immediately went to the old man and the young gentleman, and they were interviewed on TV. Three days later, the police revealed the allegedly missing bus 375 to be immersed in a water reservoir about 100km from its destination, in the fragrant hills.

The bus' condition when it was found was as follows:

• There were three very badly decomposed bodies inside the bus.

• The bus did not have petrol to travel that far from the beginning.

• The petrol tank was filled with fresh blood instead of petrol.

• The corpses found were too decomposed, considering they could have died no longer than two days ago.

This urban legend is based on a true story. It is supposedly the story of a real murder case in Beijing.
