Kuchisake Onna is one of the most famous urban legends of Japan. The legend is also famous by the name of "The slit mouthed woman".

Once, there lived a very beautiful woman in the country of Japan. A few laters after she was married, her face was mutilated by her husband, a samurai, as punishment for betraying his trust. He sliced her mouth from ear to ear with his sword, causing her to die on the spot. A few years after the incident, rumors spread throughout Japan about a woman in a surgical mask, abducting children and killing them. She was believed to approach children going home from school, in dark streets, if the children were alone. Due to her mutilated face, she became known as Kuchisake Onna.

A conversation with Kuchisake Onna is assumed to be like this:

  • She asks a question: "Am I beautiful?"

  • If the person says no, she kills the person with a huge pair of scissors.

  • If the person says yes, she takes her mask off and repeats her question.

  • Again, if the person says yes, she cuts their mouth exactly like hers.

  • If the person says no, she cuts them in half with the scissors.

People believe there are only a few ways to escape her:

  • When she asks her question, the person should answer saying, "You are average looking" or "Do you think you are beautiful?"

  • This will confuse her and give you some time to escape to a more crowded area.

  • She can also be distracted by throwing candies or fruits at her feet.

There are no records of a person escaping from her till date. Although, these killings have stopped a long while ago.
