Adam walked the streets of his neighborhood, looking at the Halloween decorations in loathing. He had never liked Halloween very much. He thought it was silly to run around wearing costumes and ask for candy. He and his friends liked to hang out by the moon cliff, a local tourist spot, during Halloween. They would take turns jumping into the lake below, which was rumored to be full of disgusting creatures that made your skin crawl. But Adam was never afraid. He was always the first to jump in, and the last to come out, even on moonless nights.

As he roamed about the huge town, he reached the infamous abandoned circus. He looked around for a bit, before jumping over the gates and disappearing into the darkness. He walked about the circus calmly, his hands in his pockets, surveying the area for any signs of life. He heard a rustle behind him, and he turned around. No one was around. He left soon, with a feeling of dread clouding his mind.

—⁂—

Adam woke up to Halloween eve feeling strange. Ignoring it, he went down to the kitchen to drink some water. His mother wasn't there, nor his father. It seemed strange. But he didn't notice. Soon, he left for the moon cliff. On his way, he passed the circus once again. He looked around for a while before going inside. He didn't know why he was there. He wasn't supposed to be, but something was calling out to him. He strolled cautiously, breathing heavier than usual. He walked slowly, and a faint whisper began in his ears. “Go away… go away…” yet he walked on, oblivious to the whisper.

He had eyes for only one thing now– a ring, which shined with a silver glow. His eyes went wide as he held it in his hands, and ignoring the now screaming words in his ears telling him to go away, he wore the ring. The silver glimmer faded away as a blood-red glow lit up Adam's face. He looked at it with a hungry look in his eyes. He turned around and saw a tall figure watching him from far away. Without hesitation, he walked up to it and it nodded. Together, they walked out of the circus and towards the lively town. Full of liveliness… full of light… full of fear, waiting to be awoken.
